The opening of the 1982 BBC production of The Scarlet Pimpernel, which blends Baroness Orczy’s original with elements from a later Pimpernel novel, El Dorado. Anthony Andrews is wonderful in the role of Sir Percy Blakeney, and there is real chemistry between him and Jane Seymour as Marguerite. Although Nina and Ian’s simulation follows the novel more exactly than this TV version, at least at first, the students keep inserting pieces from the film. Besides, it’s much more fun to watch than the baroness’s purple prose is to read (although not more fun than The Not Exactly Scarlet Pimpernel, I hope).
The film was uploaded in pieces, but you can click from one to the next through the menus at the side of the YouTube screen, which also list the complete 1934 version starring Leslie Howard, Merle Oberon, and Raymond Massey as a delightfully creepy Chauvelin.
